Grey water sitting over the filter after a cycle usually means a blockage between the tub and the sink drain, not a dead machine.

Once a wash or rinse finishes, a small drain pump under the tub pushes water through a corrugated hose to the sink plumbing. On the way it passes a filter in the tub floor, a one-way check valve, and then either an air gap on the sink deck or a high loop of hose under the counter before it empties into the disposal or a branch tailpiece. A filter caked with food and grease is the everyday cause. A shard of glass or a cherry pit can jam the pump impeller, which then hums and moves nothing. A hose kinked when the machine was pushed back, a plugged air gap and a clogged sink trap all leave the same result: water standing in the tub.
The drain path depends on how the kitchen was put together, and the South Sound has kitchens from every era. In Eastside and South Capitol houses, dishwashers were often added to rooms that never planned for one, so hoses run long and sag low. Southeast Olympia ranch homes in Forest Hills and Holiday Hills are often on their second or third sink remodel. Newer kitchens around Meridian Campus and Horizon Pointe in Lacey are tidier, but a new disposal hooked up without knocking out its dishwasher inlet plug stops drainage on day one. Tumwater’s Deschutes neighborhood mixes both. Soft Olympia and Tumwater water adds a twist of its own: a heavy hand with detergent makes foam the pump struggles to push.
| What shows up | Usual reason | Yours to check? | Our part |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dirty water pooled over the filter | Filter packed with food, grease or bottle labels | Yes, twist out and rinse the filter | Clean the sump and confirm the pump clears it |
| A hum at drain time, no water moving | Glass shard or cherry pit lodged at the impeller, or a worn-out pump | No, the pump sits under the tub | Unjam the impeller, or fit a new pump from truck stock |
| Water spurts from the small cap beside the faucet | Clogged air gap on the sink deck | Yes, lift off the cap and clear debris | Clean the air gap and the hose run below it |
| Stopped draining right after a new disposal went in | Disposal knockout plug never removed | Ask whoever installed the disposal first | Clear the inlet with the disposal unplugged, then test drain |
| Sink water backs up into the dishwasher tub | No high loop or air gap, or a clogged sink trap | Yes, look at the hose loop under the sink | Reroute the hose into a proper high loop and test |
A clean filter, a fast sink and a tub that still holds water mean the problem sits under the tub or inside the hose, and that is our side of the line. We pull the kick plate, check the pump for current and blockage, look at the check valve and hose, and run a test drain before naming a part. The price then goes on paper, and no tool comes out until you agree to it. Agreeing makes the $99 diagnostic part of that sum; saying no keeps the charge at $99. Rentals add one text: the property owner’s yes on that figure, before we start.
Some models keep a small puddle in the sump under the filter to keep the seals wet, so a cupful down there is not a fault. A pool that covers the filter or spreads over the tub floor once the cycle is done is another matter. That means the drain pump, hose, air gap or sink plumbing isn’t moving it out.
It is the small chrome or plastic cap beside the faucet on many South Sound kitchen sinks. Dishwasher water climbs through it before heading to the drain, which keeps dirty sink water from siphoning back into the tub. If water spurts out of that cap during a cycle, the gap or the hose below it is clogged. Kitchens without one rely on a high loop under the counter.
New disposals ship with a plug sealed inside the dishwasher inlet, and it has to be knocked out when the dishwasher hose is connected. If it gets missed, the dishwasher pumps against a wall. It is a common call after a kitchen update in Lacey and Olympia. We don’t repair disposals, but clearing that inlet is part of getting your dishwasher to drain.
Please don’t. Caustic drain cleaners can damage the pump seal, the hose and the tub, and whoever works on the machine next has to reach into that water. If the filter is clean and the sink drains well, the block is past anywhere a chemical can reach anyway. Scoop the water out, leave the door cracked, and book a visit.
Dishwasher visits in Tumwater, Olympia and Lacey usually land within the week, and a next-day slot is common. You choose a two-hour arrival window when you book. Early or late windows can be requested if you work shifts at Providence St. Peter, commute up I-5 to JBLM, or keep a state-office schedule.
Book the $99 visit. Say yes to the priced repair and those $99 are already in it.
