An empty bin usually means the ice maker is short on water or cold, and only sometimes a failed module.

A built-in ice maker is a small timed machine that depends on the refrigerator around it. Its control waits until the mold is cold enough, well below freezing, then a motor turns the ejector arms to push the cubes out and signals the water valve to open for a few seconds. From the supply line, water passes the filter and the inlet valve mounted low on the cabinet’s rear, then climbs a fill tube into the mold. A freezer running warm never lets the mold get cold enough to cycle. Starve the mold of water, through a plugged filter or a valve that barely opens, and the batch never forms. A valve that drips between fills can freeze the fill tube solid, and a raised shutoff arm or a full-bin signal tells the machine to rest.
South Sound water is part of this story. City water in Olympia and Tumwater runs soft, so scale is seldom the culprit, but private wells in unincorporated Thurston County, and a few Lacey wells, carry iron and manganese that settle as fine sediment in the inlet screen, the filter and the valve. Winter matters too. With about 78 nights a year at freezing, a refrigerator in a cold garage may barely run, and its freezer drifts too warm to make ice. Windstorm outages add a third failure: cubes melt, then refreeze into one block that jams the ejector or the dispenser auger. It happens to French-door models in Hawks Prairie kitchens as readily as to a garage side-by-side on Tumwater Hill or near the Lakes area off Carpenter Road.

|---|---|---|---|
| No ice, and freezer food feels soft | Freezer too warm from airflow, defrost or sealed-system trouble | Yes, check the setting and use a thermometer | Diagnose the freezer first; warm freezers get same-day priority |
| Ice in the fill cup or tube, mold empty | Fill tube frozen by a dripping valve or low pressure | Look only, and don’t chip at it | Thaw the tube, test the inlet valve, fix the cause |
| Small, hollow or very few cubes | Clogged filter or sediment in the inlet screen | Yes, replace an overdue water filter | Measure flow and replace a restricted inlet valve |
| Dispenser water slow, ice maker also stalled | Low supply pressure, a kinked line or a clogged saddle valve | Yes, make sure the shutoff is fully open | Test pressure at the valve and correct the supply side |
| Ice maker hums, arms stuck mid-turn | Cubes frozen into a block, or a failed module motor | Yes, empty the bin and break up clumps | Clear the jam, test the module, and replace it if needed |
Book a visit if the freezer is warm, if you can see ice packed in the fill tube, if water trickles instead of flowing from the dispenser, or if the ice maker hums without turning. A warm freezer moves up the list, and same-day windows go there first. We read freezer temperature, test the inlet valve and water pressure, thaw the fill tube, and meter the ice maker module before naming a part. A written figure reaches you before a single part changes. Accept it and the $99 you already paid is inside it; decline and nothing beyond that $99 is owed.
The fill tube runs through the freezer wall into the ice mold, and any water left sitting in it can freeze. A valve that drips between cycles, water pressure so low that it trickles, or a freezer set far colder than needed are the usual reasons. Thawing it brings ice back for a while, but the tube will freeze again until the cause is fixed.
Yes. Iron and manganese from private wells settle as fine grit, and the inlet valve has a small screen that catches it. Over time the screen and the refrigerator filter clog, flow drops, and cubes shrink until the maker stalls. We check the valve and screen, and if the well water is the root cause, we tell you plainly so you can take it up with a water-treatment company.
No. When it comes to ice, we only touch the units that come built into a refrigerator, and we also handle the refrigerator around it, plus washers, dryers, dishwashers and ovens. Freestanding, countertop and commercial ice machines fall outside what we do. An empty bin in your fridge door or freezer drawer, though, is squarely our job across Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater.
Check the freezer first. If it holds near 0°F and food is frozen solid, the problem is usually on the water side or in the ice maker itself. A warm freezer makes the empty bin a symptom rather than the cause, and the refrigerator needs a diagnosis of its fans, defrost system or sealed system. We read both on the same visit.
Many refrigerators run the compressor based on the fresh-food section. In a cold garage that section rarely asks for cooling, so the compressor hardly runs and the freezer drifts too warm for the ice maker to cycle. It is a common winter complaint in the South Sound. Some models are built for garage use and others aren’t, and a visit tells you which you have.
