A puddle under the crisper drawers or a wet floor behind the fridge usually starts at a blocked defrost drain or the water supply.

A refrigerator handles water on two paths. Meltwater from each defrost cycle runs off the freezer coil into a trough, down a small drain tube and into a pan underneath, where warmth from the condenser evaporates it. If that tube clogs with crumbs or freezes shut, the water backs up and spills under the crisper drawers or onto the floor. The second path is the supply: a thin line from the house feeds an inlet valve at the back, which sends water to the dispenser and up the ice maker fill tube. A cracked valve, a loose fitting, a filter head that no longer seals or a frozen fill tube will each drip in its own spot. A cabinet tilted forward sends even normal water the wrong way.
Water here is not all the same, and that matters for the valve. Olympia’s city water comes soft from the McAllister Wellfield, so inlet screens stay fairly clean. A few Lacey wells carry a trace of iron and manganese, and private wells in unincorporated Thurston County, out past Black Lake and the far end of Littlerock Road, can carry more. That sediment packs the inlet valve screen until the valve sticks slightly open and weeps, or overfills the ice maker. The house adds the rest. In older ranch homes around Forest Hills and Holiday Hills, the fridge line is sometimes an old saddle valve tapped into copper in a cold crawlspace. And a tired door gasket lets damp kitchen air in, which becomes extra meltwater for the drain to carry.
| Where the water is | Most likely source | Okay to check yourself? | Our fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water pooling under the crisper drawers | Clogged or frozen defrost drain from the freezer | Yes: pull the drawers and sop up the water | Clear and flush the drain, then find out why it froze |
| Ice sheet across the freezer floor | Drain frozen shut, often from a failed defrost or drain heater | Yes: take a photo; don’t chip at it with tools | Thaw the drain, meter the defrost parts, replace what failed |
| Puddle behind the fridge, near the wall | Leaking inlet valve, supply fitting or old saddle valve | Yes: close the supply valve and dry the floor | Find the exact fitting and replace the valve or line |
| Drip from the filter housing or dispenser | Wrong filter, worn O-ring or a cracked filter head | Yes: reseat the filter or try the correct model | Replace the filter head or dispenser parts as needed |
| Rust-tinted drip tray or cloudy, tinted ice | Iron sediment from well water clogging the inlet valve screen | Yes: note whether you are on a private well | Replace the inlet valve and talk through filtering the line |
Book when water comes back after the drawers are dried, when ice keeps forming on the freezer floor, or when the drip is at the back near the valve. Wet subfloor under vinyl is the costly part of a slow leak, so don’t let it run for weeks. On the visit, the technician flushes and checks the drain, meters the defrost parts and the inlet valve, and writes one price for the fix. Approving it tucks the $99 inside that total. A no means $99 covers the visit and nothing follows it. Most leak calls get a slot within the week, many of them the next day.
Almost always a blocked or frozen defrost drain. Meltwater that should drop through a tube at the back of the freezer backs up instead and finds its way into the fresh-food side. Food bits, mold or a plug of ice can block the tube. We clear and flush it, then check why it froze, because a failed drain heater or defrost part will plug it again within weeks.
It can. Iron and manganese, common in private wells around unincorporated Thurston County and present in small amounts in a few Lacey city wells, settle in the inlet valve’s screen. A partly clogged valve may stick open and weep, or overfill the ice maker until water spills. Olympia’s soft city water rarely causes this. If the valve is the culprit, it gets replaced and we talk through filtering the line.
They were common in homes plumbed before quarter-turn valves took over, and many still work. They can weep where they clamp to the pipe, and the small hole they pierce can clog with sediment. If the leak turns out to be at the house valve rather than the refrigerator, you will hear that directly; replacing house plumbing is a plumber’s job, not an appliance repair.
Less urgent than a warm one, but not something to leave. Shut the supply valve, turn the ice maker off and keep the drawers dry, and a supply leak usually slows to nothing. A defrost drain leak keeps going until it’s fixed, though. Leak calls usually fit into this week’s schedule, with next-day slots common, and the food stays cold while you wait.
Whoever owns or manages the place. The technician diagnoses the leak, writes one price and sends it by text to whoever approves repairs, and work starts only after they say yes. Tenants just need to be home or arrange access. Rentals follow the same $99 rule: it lands inside the approved repair, or stands as the whole charge if the owner declines.
Book the $99 visit. Say yes to the priced repair and those $99 are already in it.
