Refrigerator not cooling in the Olympia area: frost, fans or compressor

Freezer still cold but the milk is warm? That pattern points to airflow, usually a frosted evaporator coil or a stalled fan.

Cold freezer, warm fridge: how that happens

French-door refrigerator open for a cooling diagnostic in a South Sound kitchen
Refrigerator not cooling

Most refrigerators in South Sound kitchens make their cold in one place: a coil behind the back panel of the freezer, called the evaporator. A small fan draws air over that coil and sends a share of it down a duct to the fresh-food compartment. On a schedule set by the control, a defrost heater warms the coil to melt the frost it collects, and a sensor or bimetal thermostat ends the cycle. If the heater, the sensor or the control fails, frost keeps building until air can no longer pass. The freezer stays cold because it sits right against the coil, so the fresh-food side warms first. A dead evaporator fan, a matted condenser coil or a stalled condenser fan underneath can produce the same warm milk.

The local version of this problem has a few threads. Kitchens in South Capitol and along the Eastside were laid out long before today’s deep refrigerators, so plenty of units are wedged into alcoves with no room to breathe, and the condenser runs hot. In Hawks Prairie, in Jubilee and in the Bush Prairie neighborhoods east of the airport, the second fridge often lives in the garage, where a heat wave like the record June scorcher pushes it past what it was built to handle. Fall and winter windstorms add another thread. When PSE restores power after an outage, the flicker and surge can scramble a control board or finish off a tired start relay. Dog hair and garage dust on the condenser coil do the rest.

Checks you can make before you call

  • Confirm the temperature control wasn’t bumped during cleaning or by a stray grocery bag.
  • For a true reading, stand a thermometer in a cup of water on the middle shelf.
  • Until the technician arrives, keep milk, meat and leftovers iced down in a cooler.
  • Look at the freezer’s back wall; a white sheet of frost there points to defrost trouble.
  • Keep food and ice bags away from the air vents inside both the freezer and fridge.
  • Vacuum the grille at floor level and leave a few inches of open air behind the cabinet.

When to stop adjusting the dial and book

If a thermometer on the middle shelf reads above 40 degrees with the control set normally, or the freezer’s back wall has gone white with frost, stop adjusting and book. Warm refrigerators get first claim on same-day windows. On the visit, the defrost heater, sensor, both fans and start relay each get a meter reading; you hear in everyday language which one quit, and the price goes on paper. Approving it counts the $99 toward that figure instead of adding it; declining means $99 and not a cent past it. The truck usually carries the defrost and fan parts, so most repairs finish that same visit.

Asked about this problem

Why is my freezer cold while the refrigerator side is warm?

Because on most models the fresh-food side makes no cold by itself. Its chill comes from the freezer coil, fed over through a duct and damper. When frost blocks that coil, or the evaporator fan stops, the freezer keeps some cold from sitting next to the coil while the fridge slowly warms. It is the most common warm-fridge pattern there is, and it usually comes down to defrost parts or a fan.

Should I unplug the refrigerator to melt the frost myself?

It can help as a stopgap. With the food moved out, the doors open and towels down, a full day unplugged melts most of the frost, and the fridge may cool again for a week or two. That tells you the defrost system is the likely cause, but it does not fix it, and the frost returns. Never chip ice off the coil; one slip can puncture the tubing and end the refrigerator.

Is an older refrigerator in Olympia worth repairing?

Often, yes. Fans, defrost heaters, sensors and start relays are routine repairs on a machine with a sound compressor, and older units in Olympia kitchens tend to be simpler to work on. A failed compressor or a refrigerant leak is a bigger decision. Either way, you learn which part quit and see a single price in writing, and if an older machine does not justify the repair, the technician will say so.

Can a PSE outage damage a refrigerator?

It can. Power rarely comes back cleanly after a windstorm; it flickers and surges for a moment, and that is hard on control boards and compressor start relays. During a long outage, keep both doors shut. If you can, leave the fridge unplugged until the power has held steady a little while, then reconnect it. If it runs but stays warm afterward, a board or relay is the first suspect.

Do you work on garage refrigerators in Lacey and Tumwater?

Yes, and the diagnosis and repairs are the same as in the kitchen. Garages add their own strain: summer heat makes the condenser work harder, and a cold winter garage can leave the freezer soft on single-thermostat models. The owner’s manual lists the room temperature range the unit was designed for. If yours was never meant for a garage, the technician will say so before you approve any repair.
