Washer not draining in Olympia: pump, trap or the pipe behind it

Gray water sitting in the drum at cycle’s end usually means a packed drain filter, a failed pump or more suds than the machine can push out.

What has to happen for a washer to drain

Front-load washer with the door boot pulled back for inspection
Washer not draining

When a wash or rinse ends, the control powers the drain pump, a small motor low in the cabinet that pushes water up the drain hose and into your standpipe or laundry sink. On most front-loaders, that water passes a coin trap first, a filter behind a small door at the lower front that catches coins, hair ties, bra wire and lint. When that trap packs full, or a sock slips past into the pump housing, the impeller stalls. A pump that hums without moving water is jammed or failed. A pressure sensor tells the control when the tub is empty, and a front-loader keeps its door locked until that sensor agrees, so a drain fault can look like a stuck door.

Two local conditions make drains work harder. The first is soft water. Olympia’s city water and much of Tumwater’s run soft, and soft water turns a normal scoop of detergent into a drum of foam. High-efficiency washers sense heavy suds and pause, add rinses or post a drain error, and a pump fighting foam moves little water. The second is old plumbing. Plenty of homes on the Eastside, in Bigelow and around South Capitol send the washer into drain lines that have carried decades of lint, and a modern pump can outrun a narrowed pipe until the standpipe overflows. On the Westside, in Lakemoor and West Bay Hills ramblers, the laundry often sits in a garage or utility room where the hose kinks when the washer gets pushed back.

Safe moves while the drum is full

  • Unplug the washer before touching the coin trap or its small drain hose.
  • Lay towels and a shallow pan down first; the trap releases more water than expected.
  • Straighten the drain hose behind the machine; a kink after a push-back stops everything.
  • Check pockets for coins, keys and hair ties every load; the trap catches what you miss.
  • Use HE detergent, and less than the cap line in soft Olympia or Tumwater water.
  • Bail the drum with a cup and bucket rather than tipping the washer to empty it.

When to call instead of bailing again

Stop and book if the trap is clean and the pump still hums without moving water, if you hear nothing at all at drain time, or if the door stays locked over a full drum. Leave the water in place if you can’t bail it comfortably; the technician will pump it out. A meter goes on the pump, then the pressure sensor, then the lock, and one price follows in writing. Approving it makes the $99 part of that total. Declining keeps the whole bill at $99. A pump on backorder means a later stop to install it, and that stop is not billed as a new trip.

A washer that won’t drain gets metered, the bad part gets identified, and the price goes on paper. Accepting it tucks the $99 into that total; turning it down ends the call at $99. Request service →

Asked about this problem

Where is the drain filter on a front-load washer?

On most front-loaders from LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag and Electrolux, it sits behind a small door at the lower front corner, often with a short drain hose beside it. Unplug the washer, set down towels and a shallow pan, drain the hose first, then turn the filter out slowly. Most top-loaders have no user filter. If yours needs tools or a panel removed, leave it for the visit.

Why does my washer foam so much with Olympia’s soft water?

Hard water spends part of the detergent on minerals; soft water lets every bit of it foam. Cap lines assume average water, and Olympia’s is softer than average, so the usual scoop can overwhelm an HE washer that uses little water to begin with. Use HE detergent, start at half the line or less, and cut back further if suds still show in the final rinse.

How do I know if it’s the washer or the house drain?

Pour a bucket of water quickly into the standpipe or laundry sink. If it backs up or drains slowly, the house line is restricted and the washer is probably fine. If the pipe swallows the bucket easily, the problem is inside the washer. Either way, the technician confirms it on the visit, and if it is plumbing, you hear that before any repair price is written.

Is it all right to leave water in the washer until the appointment?

For a day or two, yes. Leave the lid up on a top-loader so it doesn’t sour, and keep a full front-loader’s door closed; forcing open a flooded front door is how laundry rooms end up underwater. Don’t run more cycles hoping it clears. Most drain calls get a slot inside the week, many for the following day.

Do you repair top-load and front-load washers in Lacey?

Both, in Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater. Speed Queen and Maytag top-loaders, LG, Samsung and Bosch front-loaders, and plenty of Whirlpool and GE machines are all on our list. Top-loaders usually fail to drain from a jammed or worn pump or a lid lock fault; front-loaders more often from the coin trap, the pump or the door lock circuit. The diagnosis is the same meter-first process either way.
