Why a washer rocks, bangs or travels

Washer shaking or walking

A washer drum hangs inside the cabinet on springs and dampers so it can wobble without shaking the house. On a front-loader, springs hold the tub from above and shock absorbers steady it from below, with a heavy counterweight bolted on to calm the spin. On many top-loaders, suspension rods at the corners do the same job. When a damper wears out or a counterweight bolt loosens, the tub swings farther every spin until it bangs the cabinet. Uneven feet let the whole machine rock, and a rocking washer walks. Heavy single items, like a bath mat or a queen comforter, pile the water to one side. A worn drum bearing adds a roar that grows with speed, which is a different and bigger repair.

This area moves a lot of washers. JBLM families come and go through Lacey and Hawks Prairie with the PCS season, and a front-loader shipped without its bolts, or installed with them still in, shakes hard from the first spin. Floors matter as much as parts. Newer two-story builds in Hawks Prairie and around Tumwater often put the laundry upstairs or over a garage, where a small wobble travels through the joists as a thump. Manufactured homes on Tumwater Hill and older Westside ramblers in Lakemoor and West Bay Hills sit on floors that give more than a slab. And a washer in a damp garage can rust its leveling feet in place, so leveling becomes a job of its own.

Steadying a washer without opening it

  • Check the back of a new or recently moved front-loader for shipping bolts.
  • Set a level across the top, side to side and then front to back.
  • Twist each foot to adjust it, then snug its lock nut up against the cabinet.
  • Wash a lone comforter or bath mat with two or three towels to balance it.
  • Keep the shipping bolts in a bag taped to the washer for the next move.
  • Stop the cycle if the tub hits the cabinet; repeated hits damage both.

When the shaking needs a technician

If the washer still walks after the bolts are out and the feet are level, or the tub knocks the cabinet with a balanced load, it’s time to book. A roar during spin belongs on the calendar too, before a worn bearing turns into a leak. The technician checks level, suspension, dampers, counterweight hardware and the bearing, then writes one price. Choose the repair and the $99 is simply part of that number. Skip it and you owe the $99 alone. Suspension rods and dampers are common truck stock, so the fix is often done in one visit.

A shaking washer gets checked from the feet up before any part is named. The $99 diagnostic becomes one line inside a repair you approve; decline the fix and it stands alone on the invoice. Request service →

Asked about this problem

What are shipping bolts, and how can I tell if mine are still in?

They are long bolts, usually three or four, that lock a front-loader’s tub to the back panel for transport. Installation removes them, and plastic caps fill the holes. If you see bolt heads instead of caps, they are still in, and the installation guide shows how to take them out with a wrench. Running the washer with them in can damage the suspension and bearings.

My washer only shakes with certain loads. Is it broken?

Probably not. A single heavy item like a bath mat, a queen comforter or a dog bed soaks up water on one side of the drum, and the washer can’t balance it. Most machines pause and try to redistribute, and some cut spin speed. Add two or three towels to balance bulky items, and check the manual on waterproof items, which many makers say not to spin.

Will anti-vibration pads stop a washer from walking?

They help on smooth vinyl or tile, where the feet have little grip, and they soften some noise. They won’t fix a washer with worn dampers, loose counterweight bolts or shipping bolts still in, and on a flexing floor they only hide the symptom. Level the machine and lock the feet first, then add pads afterward if it still creeps.

Our Tumwater home is manufactured. Is the floor the problem?

It can be part of it. Floors in manufactured homes, and in older Tumwater and Olympia houses over crawlspaces, flex more than a concrete slab, so a normal spin wobble can turn into a shudder. We check the washer first, since worn suspension makes any floor look bad. If the machine is sound, we’ll tell you so; reinforcing a floor is a carpentry job, not an appliance repair.

We just moved to Lacey on PCS orders. Can you check the washer before the first load?

Yes. A diagnostic visit can cover shipping bolts, level, hoses and a test spin, and it is a good time to catch transit damage. In a rental, the landlord or manager gets the written figure by text, and no repair starts until they reply yes. Early or late windows can be requested for JBLM commuters. The $99 counts inside any repair you approve and is the full charge otherwise.
